American online mail-order dealer Amazon is building its 13th packaging centre in England, creating more than 1,500 new jobs. Contractor Steel Work Construction Ltd. decided to use two 40-t Sennebogen 643 R telescopic cranes for the project.

Tilbury, located on the Thames, has a population of 12,000 and will soon be home to one of England's largest warehouses – in terms of the volume of steel used to realise the project. Building the steel frame construction of the new warehouse was assigned to Steel Work Construction Ltd. The new packaging centre will form a part of London Distribution Park, a 28-hectare development area for industry and logistics companies in the port of Tilbury.

Steel Work Construction has successfully deployed two Sennebogen 643 R to the project. The telescopic crawler crane is highly maneuverable and flexible. It performs logistics tasks on the construction site and is also used to lift the heavy steel girders later supporting the roof. Sourced from the rental fleet of UK sales and service partner AGD Equipment Ltd., the machines with their four-piece 30-meter telescopic booms are the perfect equipment when it comes to lifting the 2,000 steel girders of two to six tons each into place. This is hard work made easy, thanks to the robust Full-Power Boom that can be telescoped under load even while the machine is travelling on site. The powerful, hydraulically telescoping undercarriage makes sure that the 643 R remains stable and safe.

The construction site is always busy – after all, the objective is to build England's first four-level distribution center with a total height of 22 m. This is where the 643 R's compact dimensions come in handy: with its transport width of only 3.0 m, the machine can be easily transported to the site of operation on a low loader trailer. Upon arrival, the 643 R telescopic crawler crane is quickly set up for operation, allowing it to be reliably and flexibly adjusted to the conditions on site. Its Maxcab comfort cab can be steplessly tilted backwards by 15 degrees to give the operator an optimal view of the work area while ensuring an ergonomic, hence optimal work posture.
